Pieces of our distant, and not so distant, past. Real people, real stories that made local headline news, touched our hearts, made us laugh or cry. Several more will publish often. We'd love your suggestions of other memories to include on these pages.

APRIL 23, 1995 - A LOOK BACK

On April 23, 1995, Mancelona's gas explosion rocked our small community.  Out of the ashes and many setbacks, the community pushed forward with determination to not only survive, but to rebuild stronger.

The three businesses destroyed by the explosion were The Studio (owned by Kathleen Neeland), Johnson's Home Furnishings (owned by Wayne and Kathie Johnson), and Redmoon Floral and Gifts (owned by Shawn and Ellen Fleet).

The Studio was located across State Street from the bank, with it's storefront facing State Street. Next door to it was Johnson's Home Furnishings, a 3-story building - also facing State Street - on the intersection of M-88 (State Street) and South Maple Street. Redmoon Floral and Gifts was in a building behind Johnson's Home Furnishings, with the store's entrance facing South Maple Street. All three stores - the entire "triangle," - were destroyed.

The corner later became Triangle Park, where our village clock and park benches have been place. This is also where the Chamber of Commerce hosts Summer Celebration concerts throughout the summer months.

Here is a look back at some of the photos and articles from that day.  (This article published 4/21/2023)
